ロンドンを中心に活動するクリステル・リバスは、特定の場所における時間の移行と、それに伴う"意識"の移行をテーマとしたシリーズを撮り続けています。2003年に発表した「Moving Landscape」シリーズでは、ピンホールカメラを使用して長時間露光で撮影する、という手法を用いています。それによって記録された膨大な量の素材から、それぞれの場所を最も良く記録している１枚を選び出して作品を作り出します。本作は同シリーズからの貴重な未発表作品で、アイスランドの透明感あふれる海の風景がモチーフになっています。どこか19世紀ドイツロマン主義の画家カスパー・ダヴィット・フリードリヒの影響を感じさせるリバスは、奇しくも同じように、アーティスト活動の傍らロンドンの大学で教鞭を執っています。
1966年、フランス、プロヴァンス生まれ。
1990年から、フランス、イギリスを中心に主にヨーロッパで作品を発表する。1997年にロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アート卒業後、現在はロンドンに在住して創作活動を行っている。これまでに、ポーランドのクラコー、ベルリン、ロンドン等にて個展を開催。2002年ロンドンのフォトグラファーズ・ギャラリーにて、夜の始まりから朝が来るまでの空の様子を長時間露光させて写した「Azure」シリーズを発表。2004年2月のncaのオープニング展「Identity」では、深い眠りに就いた女性の顔を撮ったポートレート「Sleep」シリーズからセルフポートレートのモノクローム作品を発表。 2004年に完成した初のモノグラム「Time in Space」は『2004年ブリティッシュ・ブックデザイン＆プロダクション賞』を受賞。水、空、山など自然の情緒と時間の流れを写実的に表現する。パリの国立図書館、企業コレクションなどに作品が収められている。
